Amazon is banning books by conservatives. Facebook has taken it upon itself to ban whatever it deems to be "fake news." Now we see the latest (and potentially the most oppressive) entry into the effort to silence gun owners. This comes from the troubled web site "Politifact." This site has been the subject of much investigation, as any web search about it with the word "bias" will show. Politifact says gun control had nothing to do with the mass murders of the Holocaust, and the "notion" that is does is refuted by scholars. READ HERE, Uh huh. Jews were banned from having guns. The Nazis went to the homes of Jews, kidnapped them, and sent them to death camps. The Jews had no possible means of defense.
(By the way, President Obama used the passively-aggressive and dismissive phrase "the notion" to put down the ideas of his political rivals. Note today how often you hear Democrats use that as a way to denigrate opposing ideas.)
Perhaps more troubling than the nonsense from Politifact is that Facebook says it depends upon "third party fact checkers" to decide which photos, stories, and posts to ban. READ HERE
This is part of what I call the "Well, everyone knows" movement. Everyone knows that "assault weapons" are responsible for most murders. Everyone knows that "assault weapons" are machine guns. Everyone knows that gun control laws reduce crime. Everyone knows that people rarely use guns in self-defense. Of course, all of these are false, but I bet a depressingly large number of Americans believe these lies to be true. How can that be? Simple. They don't hear any voices to the contrary. "Everyone knows" is a powerful tool. Combine a media which actively and loudly promote gun bans with a widespread effort to rewrite history and filter information, and the landscape is ripe for the public to vote for gun control measures, as we are seeing with "red flag" and "universal background check" laws.
When Facebook, Twitter, and other social media conduits restrict, ban, shadow ban, and delete factual messages their virtue-signaling moderators think the public should not see, it becomes ever more difficult for the public to be informed.
This is by design. Once you convince the public that something which actually is false is true (and millions of messages speeding through the media and online can do this), you can orchestrate the outcome of elections. It is, in fact, the "Big Lie" concept in action.
This is, in my view, a clear and present danger. When President Trump says the mainstream media is the enemy of the people, he's pretty close to the mark. Let's be clear. I'm advocating only that we fight this with information. But fight it we must, in every venue. In the checkout line. At meetings. With neighbors. With online comments. With guest editorials. With letters to television and radio stations and networks (ask them to put your letter in their FCC files).
If only one viewpoint is heard, then "everyone knows" will rule the day. ~ Tom
