NRA Endorses Trump for Reelection

In an expected move, the National Rifle Association has officially endorsed President Donald Trump in his bid for reelection in 2020.

The NRA has been a staunch supporter of Trump since his election in 2016. In return, Trump has spoken at two NRA Annual Meetings – the first sitting president to speak at an NRAAM since Ronald Reagan – and has been a proponent of gun rights throughout his term in office.

"On behalf of America’s 5 million NRA members, the National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund (NRA-PVF) is proud to endorse your reelection as president of the United States of America,” the NRA’s political action committee said in a letter to Trump. “You have done more than any president to protect the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. The NRA stands behind you and your administration.”

Despite this ringing endorsement, Trump and the NRA have not always agreed on every issue. One area where Trump and the NRA differed was the bump stock ban. Seen by many as a politically expedient and disingenuous move by Trump, the NRA quickly denounced the president’s action for allowing the ban to becoming law. While the bump stock ban only affected a small portion of gun owners in the immediate, it was seen as more symbolic of an erosion of gun rights, asking, “If they can take those away, what else is next?”

One reason for the NRA’s backing of Trump is Democratic candidate Joe Biden’s continuous opposition to gun rights. Biden has consistently endorsed anti-gun legislation throughout this career as a Senator and Vice-President for Barack Obama. Most recently, Biden bragged about how he has “taken on” the NRA during his time in the Senate.

The NRA recently applauded Trump’s gun rights effort in the wake of the COVID-19 restrictions imposed by many states. As governors moved to close “non-essential” businesses during the lockdowns, the president added gun stores to the “essential” list to keep them open, labeling them as “critical infrastructure” necessary to preserve citizens’ freedom. This move allowed Americans to continue to purchase guns and gun supplies, resulting in over 6 million new guns sold this spring, including a record 2.6 million in March alone. ~ David
