It's that time of year, when the gun companies really crank up the new releases. A few were announced this week, with more to come in the next few days. Here are the ones we can talk about.
I had a chance to shoot the new Springfield-Armory XD(M) in 10mm a few weeks ago. It's a sweetheart. Everything you
like about the XD(M) platform, but in a "40-caliber magnum." Featuring 15 rounds in the magazine, when you load this one up, it's big and heavy, and that's good for controlling recoil. It may well become my "bear gun" for walking around the mountains. We tried the 5.25-inch slide version, with adjustable sights. I'll probably carry the 4.50-inch slide option. This also should be an awesome hog-hunting rig. See the videos we did of our first shots with it here. Springfield Armory Unboxing video HERE and Ryan shoots the XD(M) 10mm HERE.
Ruger has been busy, as well, with the AR-556 in .450 Bushmaster (think of that as the Hog Hammer!). Check the 450 Bushmaster out HERE. Just yesterday, as I write this, Ruger announced an SP101 .357 Magnum revolver in blued finish! For more information on the SP101 click HERE. Very cool.
On the long-range front, we can finally talk about a rifle we shot a couple of months ago -- the Ruger Precision Rifle in .338 Lapua and .300 Winchester Magnum. WOW! We had a chance to shoot the .338 at the FTW Ranch in the Texas Hill Country. With the wind howling (20+ mph crosswind), and the target at a mile, it was challenging, but we did manage a few hits. Without the gusting winds, it would have been a piece of cake. This is a big rifle. It's going to be wildly popular. If you want one, better have your dealer place an order with a distributor immediately.
From Ruger, we also get this safety bulletin:
READ HERE
Ruger has discovered that some Ruger American Pistols chambered in 9mm may exhibit premature wear of the locking surfaces between the slide and barrel which, if ignored, can result in a crack developing near the ejection port of the slide. This typically does not occur at round counts below 10,000 rounds. The condition is easily identified during routine maintenance and cleaning, and the crack should be visible long before the pistol becomes unsafe to shoot. Ruger is committed to safety and is asking owners of Ruger American Pistols chambered in 9mm to inspect their pistols for excessive wear or cracks and, if necessary, sign up for a FREE retrofit. Ruger American Pistols chambered in .45 Auto are not subject to this Safety Bulletin.
All Ruger American Pistols chambered in 9mm with serial number prefixes "860" and "862" are subject to this Safety Bulletin and should be inspected. Ruger American Pistol owners should visit the Ruger American Pistol Retrofit Website HERE to look up the serial number to determine if their Ruger American Pistol is subject to the Safety Bulletin, learn how to inspect their pistol to determine whether the retrofit is necessary, obtain additional information, and sign up for the retrofit if required.
Replacement components are being built and consumers who sign up for the retrofit will be served on a first-come, first-served basis. Those consumers will be sent a U.S. Postal Service box with a prepaid shipping label and detailed packaging and shipping instructions. The consumer should return only the barrel/slide assembly to Ruger. Ruger will inspect the barrel/slide assembly and install new components as needed, free of charge. The Company will make every effort to return each barrel/slide assembly within one week of the day it arrives at Ruger.
Ruger reminds consumers that periodic inspection of any firearm is important to ensuring its safe operation. You should clean and inspect your firearm after each range session. Proper maintenance increases the longevity of your firearm and will allow early detection of worn or broken parts. ~ Tom
