It took almost no time after the latest episode of First Person Defender was released that the no-nothings showed up with the "you can't do that," and "this is stupid" comments. It's interesting how much people are willing to show the world that they really are stuck on stupid. A case in point comes from one comment.
"First Person Defender is the biggest load of nonsense. You can’t draw down on unarmed people," offered one obviously-experience fighter. Not. Let's look at that. First, can we please drop the phrase "draw down?" Having said that, of course you can point your gun at an unarmed person. More people are killed in the U.S. with fists and feet than with rifles, so if someone represents a physical threat to you or someone else, there's nothing in the law that prevents you from defending yourself or others. As with every encounter, you will have to be able to justify your actions -- possibly in court.
Over the years, we've been producing First Person Defender viewers have shared stories of how watching
these self-defense scenarios have helped them be more aware of what can happen, and some even credit the series for saving them and their families. For us, that's huge. It's why we keep working to make the setups "real world" and not some fantasy from a movie. This season we feature couples. The person you spend the most time with is the one who will be able to help, if you have talked about it and (best case) have trained together. On the other hand, if your spouse is clueless, he or she can make the situation worse.
One final thought. Choose your "experts" carefully. There's a ton of garbage on the web, and not everyone who claims to have been an "operator" has that (or any) experience. Stick with sources you know. "Garbage in. Garbage out." It also applies to whatever you put into your brain. Whether it's a way to get attention, or a dysfunctional way put down others, there are always pretenders offering suggestions or negative comments. Ignore the trolls and mall ninjas.
