Five Steps to Increase EDC Safety

You never know when the fight will come for you. The real question is whether you are prepared when it does.

1. When you put on your pistol in the morning, say aloud, "This is the day I will need this gun." Not "may need." Say it out loud. Program your mind. It will help you stay alert all day long.

2. Get a dummy gun and use it often. An inert rubber or plastic gun that mimics your carry gun will fit in your holster. Two or three times a week, spend just five minutes drawing, aiming, moving, and thinking of how you would use it.

3. Shut your mouth. Don't tell anyone you carry. Other than your family and close friends in your gun world, no one else needs to know, and there is no benefit in telling them. Check your ego or your need to share. Take pride that no one knows and keep it that way.

4. Act like you are not carrying. By that, I mean don't do anything when you are carrying that you wouldn't do if you were not. For example, don't take it upon yourself to challenge anyone who is driving aggressively. Back off and let them drive away. Get it firmly in your mind that your first response -- if that option is available -- to a developing situation is to get away. Apologize, even if you are not at fault. Appear meek. Avoid the problem. Your ego can get you or someone else killed.

5. Run "What If" drills. Best place to start on this is our First Person Defender video series on YouTube, Roku, Apple TV, and www.guntalk.com. Attacks sometimes come out of nowhere. Sometimes they develop slowly, like a pot of water boiling. Watch all the episodes to get a sense of how to respond. The earlier you see something beginning the more time you have to get yourself and your loved ones out of the area. ~ Tom
