A Quick Guide to Building your Summer Carry Attire
Hot doesn’t begin to describe the summer heat here in Southern Louisiana. I’d put it somewhere between blazing hot and hell. Every Day Carry (EDC) becomes more and more difficult with each rising degree. Here are five points to consider when transitioning to summer carry.
1) Shed the heavy shirt – Finding clothing that resists printing remains the most difficult task. Whether you're heading to the lake or just running around town, select lightweight, patterned shirts. Something with a pattern on it like the Propper Covert Button-Up garment does the trick. It looks stylish, yet maintains concealment while using a lightweight blend that keeps you cool.
2) Holster options – If you continue to stress about printing, consider appendix carry. If I ever worry about printing, I typically carry in the ¾ position. Appendix carry gives quicker access to the firearm, and shirts carry their excess material towards the front. For appendix carry, I’m using the Galco Stow-n-Go IWB holster with the Sig Sauer P320C. Looking for a tuckable option? They’ve got that, too. If you want kydex, I suggest looking hard at G-Code holsters. Solid product, but just a warning, mine took a while to get. (They are that popular). You can also look at an all-in-one system like the new ShapeShift Modular Holster System from Alien Gear Holsters, which offers the option to easily switch between IWB, OWB slide or paddle, and appendix carry.
3) The Gun – Everyone wants to know what you carry. For me, the situation dictates what I carry. Since setting up shop in the Gun Talk offices, I switch up between the above mentioned P320C, and the Smith & Wesson M&P9 Shield. The Shield offers a slim, lightweight feel and is comfortable to both carry and shoot.
4) Hold ‘em up – The foundation to your EDC rig wraps around the waistline. The belt retains the holster, which keeps the gun in place. When looking for a solid belt, make it a good one. Crossbreed Holsters developed a line that continues to establish them as a leader in this category. The Founder’s Series Executive belt provides a stable platform that not only looks good, but performs well because it isn’t pliable when adding pressure from drawing the gun.
5) Well, What if… – I love to hear this one. What if I am going to the beach or pool and am wearing a swimsuit? Carry in a satchel or in a messenger bag. You always want to have something nearby. A good friend reminded me that revolvers in bags make great companions. The Ruger LCR has demonstrated reliability and accuracy, so that would be my choice for carry in these instances.
