The GunVenture team prides itself on finding unique shooting opportunities in various parts of the world. Recently, we found ourselves behind air guns from Pyramyd Air Gun Mall hunting iguana in Puerto Rico. WHAT AN ADVENTURE!
The moment we stepped off the plane, we knew we’d found a sportsman’s paradise. From picturesque beach views to rugged hills, Puerto Rico offers a chance to experience hunting at its best. We shot some live videos from Puerto Rico on YouTube and Facebook, discussing how iguanas are an issue on the island. However, we continue to get the question, “Why hunt iguanas?”
Puerto Rico, which holds 3.7 million residents, is home to nearly 6 million iguanas. Yes, that’s nearly double the population. Farmers struggle with iguanas eating crops, and iguanas dig tunnels under roadways for nesting. These pesky critters even sun themselves on the tarmac, halting air traffic. Much like our feral hogs and prairie dogs on the mainland, iguanas need to be controlled.
Our guides of Iguana Hunters Puerto Rico, Abner Almenas and Rafael Muller, led our hunting efforts. With many connections around the island, the duo rotates properties, which keeps locations fresh and hunters happy.
If you’re looking to fix any issues with your shooting before hunting season, an iguana hunt in Puerto Rico provides plenty of trigger time. Air rifles are easy to use and have no recoil. The team shot the pre-charged pneumatic air rifles with heavy grain, semi-point pellets. I carried the Kral Arms Puncher Mega, while Ryan shouldered the Air Arms Galahad.
All gear performed flawlessly, and traveling with air rifles to Puerto Rico was unbelievably simple. One tip for travelling, keep the instruction manual in the gun case with your PCP air rifle. This avoids any confusion if you get a ticket agent who isn’t familiar with firearms.
So, why do we hunt iguanas? Because the experience provides trigger time before a busy hunting season, air rifles rock and iguanas are plentiful. ~ KJ
