Oh Yeah? Well, What Do You Say to This!

You wouldn't go into a gunfight without a gun (or more than one). It makes no sense to go into a battle of ideas without having tools ... weapons, if you will ... to defend your position. When the person you are talking with (or interacting with on Facebook) cranks off a "Well, everyone knows that having a gun doesn't make you safer," or "If having a gun makes us safe, why isn't American the safest country" upperhook, you need a counter punch. Fortunately, that's easy. I'll tell you how, and where to look.

We have the tools -- the intellectual ammunition. We have facts. But, it's up to you to get them and have them ready.

Debating is tricky, especially in the sound bite culture where no one allows anyone else time to develop, present, and back up a proposition. You need to deliver quick jabs of data -- facts -- that rock your opponent back because he or she never heard those facts.

For instance, the "Why isn't American the safest" slap (it's not a question, it's an assault) is countered by our friend Guy Smith at gunfacts.info. Read more here.

Smith points out, "Homicides are so localized that 20 cities in America, consisting of seven percent of the population, account for 21 percent of the homicides." It's culture. Guy continues with the data showing that the U.S. is FAR from having the highest murder rate, as the gun banners often claim.

Use his facts, and his graphs, for pushing back on the "fewer guns would result in fewer crimes" nonsense regurgitated by the disarmament crowd and their mindless followers. Keep his excellent presentations handy for your "debate ammo."

Meanwhile, let others "give peace a chance," while you keep your gun and continue your training, in case their plan doesn't pan out. ;) ~ Tom
