It seems clear that there’s a change, or an addition, to the strategy of the gun banners. Back in the 1950s, they started with the call to ban handguns. By the early 1980s, the National Coalition To Ban Handguns pronounced in all caps “YOU DO NOT HAVE A CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO OWN A HANDGUN!”
By the early 1990s the switch was on to another class of firearm the banners thought they could demonize — modern semi-auto rifles, and we got the Clinton Gun Ban in 1994 (which thankfully sunsetted in 2004). Over the last few weeks, there have been several national stories about handguns in homes and -- using another "study" -- attempting to link that with a nonexistent increase in accidental shooting deaths of children. It's emotional, and it's effective. It's also untrue, but then, all gun control must be based on lies, because there is no logic to it.
Keep your eyes open for this return to calls for restrictions on handgun ownership. It will not replace the efforts to ban modern rifles. It's just further evidence that the goal is to ban all guns, of any design, or any capacity, and to do it by demonizing every subset which exists.
Here's my straight-up prediction. This year we will face the most serious threats, in the form of gun bans, "red flag" gun confiscation bills, bans on private gun sales ("universal background checks"), and more, that we have seen since the disastrous 1994 Brady Bill and the so-called "Assault Weapon Ban." It's happening right now.
There will be no sunset provisions to anything passed this year. If we lose it, it will be gone.
It's time to join. To donate. To volunteer. To get involved in your state gun group. To show up at events. There's really no excuse not to, and there will be no second chance. ~ Tom
