If you are giving someone a gift of a gun this year, make it even better. Spend a little more, or maybe even improve it without spending an extra dime.
Time and money. To make that gift of a firearm better and more meaningful, you can spend either, or both. If you are giving someone a gun for self defense, I offer two thoughts. First, if the receiver hasn’t really looked at options and tried different guns, let her pick her own gun. Buy her a gift certificate for the gun, but especially for training. Have her get the training first, trying more than one type and model of pistol. Then, she can buy the gun she wants.
If you are buying for someone who already knows what he or she wants, maybe you can add in a shooting or self-defense class with the gun. Always be training.
There’s another way to make a gun gift special. Rather than leave someone one or more of your guns in your will, give it away now, with a bonus. Pick a gun, and then tell the story behind it. Whether you write down the story or tell it to the person, it will mean so much more coming from you now. Firearms last a long time, and they often carry tales. You can share how you got it, whether it’s been in the family for a long time, talk about the shoots and the hunts it’s been on. With that background, it becomes so much more than just a tool.
Actually, by sharing the stories, you are giving more than a gun. You are giving something of yourself, and that’s a gift no one else can deliver.
