WHAT'S WITH THE GUN STUFF?

Okay, Tom here. I've always been a shooter. I like the mechanical aspect of guns. The first gun actions were made by locksmiths because the workings were so complicated. Hence, the "lock" in "lock, stock and barrel." Shooting is a mental game. It's an individual challenge to focus, to concentrate, to eliminate distractions, and to hit the bullseye or break the clay target. While it can be done as a team sport, generally, shooting is an
individual activity.

There are many types of guns, from shotguns to rifles to handguns. Within those broad categories, there are hundreds of sub-classes. Of course, there are many types of hunting, dozens of competitive shooting games, and then there's the most common reason for owning guns -- self defense.

HOW DID GUN TALK® GET STARTED?

At a cocktail party, of course! I was at the Women's Shooting Sports Foundation reception at the SHOT Show many years ago, having a conversation with Alan Gottlieb, founder of the Second Amendment Foundation. Knowing my background in television, Alan suggested I give talk radio a try. Six weeks later I was on the air, thinking that I would give it 13 weeks. That was in March of 1995!

Thanks, Alan!

HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHAT TO PUT ON THE SHOW?

I just put on whatever is interesting to me. I figure it'll be interesting to others, too. We have gun makers on, talking about their products. Olympic shooters, such as my friend, Kim Rhode (two Olympic gold medals). Police officers, shooting instructors, book authors, people who are alive because they had guns, gun rights
activists, gun control activists (though they usually turn down the invitation), and anyone who has something interesting to off.

I'm open to suggestions, so if you know of someone you think would be a good guest, drop me a line at info@guntalk.com.

YOU FLY AIRPLANES?

Yep. If it's loud and expensive, I'm there. Guns and airplanes! I learned to fly when I lived in Anchorage, Alaska. I was editor of Alaska magazine, and it was the perfect place to get into aviation. I now travel in my 1976 Beechcraft Bonanza all over the country. And, I can carry all the guns, knives, and ammo my weight limit will allow!

DO YOU SHOOT IN COMPETITION?

"A man's gotta know his limitations." Nuff said.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE GUN?

The one I have in my hand. Okay, I like accurate rifles and fine shotguns. I kinda got into double barrel shotguns a few years ago, though I can't afford the really top grade ones.

Of course, I love the 1911 pistol design. John Browning was a true genius. Recently I have begun learning more about the AR-15 platform. Very impressive. I'm going to attend the .223 Carbine class at Gunsite to get a solid foundation in this rifle. I just bought the new AR-15 from Smith & Wesson -- the M&P15.

HOW MANY GUNS DO YOU OWN?

I'll say the same thing I told MSNBC when they asked me that question. More than I need, and not as many as I want.

WHAT'S THE BEST WAY TO FIGHT GUN CONTROL EFFORTS?

Behave in a responsible manner. Talk in a responsible manner. And offer to take non-shooters to the range. Once you get them there, make it fun, comfortable and easy. Start them with a .22 rimfire. Remember the eye glasses and hearing protection.

When you take them to the range, they WILL have fun. You will have "vacinated" them, and their own experience now tells them that guns are not evil, and people who enjoy shooting are just like them -- because they are now us!

IF YOU COULD HAVE ONLY ONE GUN...?

Don't go there. I hate horror stories!

WHAT GUN DO YOU KEEP FOR SELF PROTECTION?

All of them.

Really, I have a 1911 in .45ACP, a S&W model 27 in .357 Magnum, the very cool Taurus revolver which shoots .45 Colt and .410 shotguns shells, and an AR-15.

That's just for starters.

I CAN'T GET GUN TALK® ON MY LOCAL RADIO STATION. WHAT DO I DO?

Speak Up! Call the local talk-format radio station and ask them to add the show. The station gets it for free. Then, have all your friends call and ask for Gun Talk®. Then visit local gun stores and ask them to become a local sponsor of Gun Talk®. When an ADVERTISER calls a station, saying it wants to sponsor a show, that always get attention.

As always, please BE POLITE.
