||Letter -- Response to US guns being smuggled to Mexico
Those of us that love the shooting sports and the right to defend our families encourage a discussion "without hyperbole or distortions" as Mr. Navarrette encouraged (Block Flow of U.S. guns). Unfortunately we are continuously on the receiving end of the exaggerations (read www.gunfacts.info).
It's amazing to me that "assault weapons" under the strict control of the federal government since 1934 are being smuggled out of this country. What Mr. Holder actually wants to ban is the most popular semi-automatic rifle used for sporting purposes. These rifles are of the semi-automatic design invented before WWII. The fact that they look like a military rifle does not make it any more so than a Ford Taurus painted to look like a NASCAR will win the Daytona 500. If the drug cartels in
Mexico are using these rifles from the U.S. then I would suggest that they are vastly under gunned by the Mexican officials using fully automatic weapons.
I do not believe that James Madison would encourage additional gun control in this country. Many of the countries with the strictest gun control have the highest rates of violent crime. Australia and England, which have virtually banned gun ownership, have the highest rates of robbery, sexual assault, and assault with force of the top 17 industrialized countries (Dutch Ministry of Justice, Criminal
Victimization in Seventeen Industrialized Countries, 2001).
I suggest that a better solution would be for the US to enforce the 20,000+ gun control laws already in place, and for Mexico to allow its citizenry the ability to defend itself.
